Good morning and happy New Year from a steel grey snow drift morning in Norway.
I spent the last few days of 2024 curled up by the woodstove with a dozen cousins and niecephews here, and so I’m easing into the new year. Before anything else in 2025 — before the inauguration anxiety, before the taxes come due, before facilitating conflicts and teaching systems change and offering strategy and advising — there is the sacred mundane.
I’m unraveling a pile of yarn as my seven-year-old niece learns to knit beside me; I’m whooping at the twelve-year-old’s win in handball; I’m gossiping with my sister and sister-cousin over the daily mountain of dishes produced by fourteen people; I’m marveling at the northern lights streaked heavy and bright across a sliver of moon.
the Northern Lights in Voss, January 2025
Many of you told me as well — we too are heavy and bright. Perhaps we all are stumbling into this new year a little bleary-eyed, a little struck with grief and wonder, a little astonished at the weight of the world and the delight of the people in ours.
I want to offer you an invitation towards rest, from this place of six hours of winter sun, with floes of ice blue and muted on the bay.
How are you resting this January? How are you easing in softly? Where can you give the gentle discipline of care to yourself and those around you?

The incomparable Toi Smith is teaching Uprooting Capitalism, and registration closes next week. I participated in one of Toi’s study groups last year (studying Silvia Federici’s work on feminism and capitalism) — Toi is a phenomenal teacher, a transformative thinker, and a skilled facilitator. Highly recommend if you too are deconstructing the insidious patterns of capitalism in your work and life.
Another brilliant open study space — Bear Hebert’s Undoing Patriarchy returns in a few weeks after a few years’ hiatus. For feminist men+.
I was riveted by this article on Andrea Munro, daughter of writer Alice Munro. What happens when our societal feminist icons betray their values at home? Content warning for CSA.
